SCI Drummer Jason Hann Answers Fan Questions in Chat

Jason Hann

Jason Hann, drummer for The String Cheese Incident and SCIde project EOTO (both performing at Tropical Nights International Incident in February 2014!) took to Facebook on Sept. 24 to answer fans’ questions.

Jason talked about touring and playing with SCI, EOTO and Prophet Massive and answered other important questions – such as the answer to the meaning of life and exactly how many margaritas he plans to drink in Riviera Maya for the International Incident. (Hint: It’s a lot!)

Question from Chuck Shannon: A STS9/SCI collab needs to happen at Hulaween. The people need to hear you and Jeffree banging some drums together. The 2004 collab needs to make another appearance.
Jason: Yes. would love that. Jeffree used to be drum tech for Leftover Salmon in the mid 90s. A band I was in opened for them and that was the one time that me and Jeffree got to play percussion together. Long overdue.
Question from Colin Seiler: When can I expect to hear you bust out a breaking bad intro jam?
Jason: ha. that would be epic. If it happens, credit yourself for the idea
Question from Eric Curtis: With a new album dropping next year, should we expect to see a lengthier tour? East coast needs some love!
Jason: Yes. Touring is still tricky for us, but we all want to get in a bus and just do it old school style
Question from Nick Mitchell: Why do I always lose everything in my pockets at cheese shows?

Jason: Chewbacca uses a utility belt. Bail the pockets.

Question from Daev Brown: Jason, how many margaritas do you think we will drink, you and I combined, in Mexico? Follow-up question: If I drink my maximum capacity of margaritas, and you drink your maximum capacity of margaritas, what is the amount of time it will take to reach the square root of our combined maximum capacity of margaritas, and how many times can you divide that number into the number of margaritas that Billy will drink?

Jason: Question 1: I’ll take bottomless pit for $300, Alex. Question 2: It will take 6 hours of full contact drinking to reach the square root of our capacity. Divide that number 9.5 times into the number of margaritas that Billy will drink.

Question from Brett McConnell: Can you explain how the SCI setlists are written out? Does each member come to the table with songs they wanna play for the night or do you guys ever take turns writing a whole setlist?

Jason: Painfully:) When we practice, we come up with songs that we want to play for a run. No matter how much we get a setlist together, it changes day of show. It really is one of the more difficult things to address as a band. We try to make sure everyone in the band is involved throughout the night and that styles and eras and instrumentation are represented. Some are more passionate than others on how the night should go.

Question from Ja Pa Ca: What was your first show as a spectator? Standout song from set list? And how many shows did you see before you started playing?

Jason: High Sierra tent late night 1996. I think Mauna Bona. I only saw a few shows as I was on the road so much and was playing more R & B and World Music away from the Jam scene.

Question from Lauren King: Where did you come up with the idea of EOTO? It is the most impressive electronic music out there today. Your improv is so much better than anything else.

Jason: We didn’t set out to put a project together. When I first joined the band, I stayed at Travis’ place the most. He had lots of instruments there, and we would jam, just the 2 of us, from 10pm-5am almost every night. We kept adding instruments n things and recorded ourselves just for fun. The first Sonic Bloom was the main reason for us to try and play in front of an audience.

Kevin Chunk Hughes: Who is your favorite Drummer?

JasonStewart Copeland and Steve Gadd have always been at the top of my list for drummers. Don Alias, Manolo Badrena, Giovanni Hidalgo, Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussein always top my favorite percussionist list

Question from Nick Mitchell: What’s the likely-hood of you kidnaping me and taking me to the Riviera in February?

Jason: With the likely-hood being on a scale of zero to 100…um…zero. Yes, I’m saying there’s a chance.

Question from Dylan Stolley: Hey there Jason, I am planning on having fun in Mexico, how about you?

Jason:  I think I’m a get ready to grab a pitcher of Margarita with you, Dylan. Hopefully we can get a hold of Gewald and work on opening some portals, too.
